My sister is politically involved. I sent her the letter my husband composed (see previous blog post below) and she sent the following to me:

I would suggest that you send the letter to your representative and senators and also "carbon copies" of the letter to the Congressmen and Senators on the subcommittees listed below. These are the folks who craft and judge legislation on your topic. They (or their staff) are more likely to pick up on this idea. If you don't want to send so much mail, I'd either send to the ranking Republican and Ranking Democrats on the committees, or, send to subcommittee members from Florida. It is entirely appropriate to contact them. Committee members serve a wider public than just their constituency when it comes to the subject matter of their committees.

If you choose this route, I would put a note at the bottom of your letters to your Rep and Senators noting that you have cc'd these committee members. You don't have to write all the names, just the names of the subcommittees.

The Subcommittee of the Committee in the House that considers these bills is the
Subcommittee on Telecommunications of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce:

The Subcommittee of the Senate Committee that considers telecommunication bills is the Subcommittee on Science and Space of the Senate Space, Commerce, Science Committee:

The new standard practice for communicating with these folks is to email the content of the letter (possibly with the Word file attached). You could also and say that a hard copy is coming in the mail and follow up with a posted letter. Ever since the anthrax incident, the safeguards that they have installed delay regular mail delivery by about 6 weeks. You can get both snail mail and email addresses at the Library of Congress website
